History of Explore The East Cape Guide

Each year, a lot of time and effort goes into creating the Explore The East Cape Guide for everyone to enjoy. There is a small team of 'locals' that travel the Pacific Coast Highway and research the journey to ensure that the information contained within the guide is current and relevant.
This ensures that you are well informed as you embark on your journey from Opotiki to Gisborne either on State Highway 2 (via the Waioeka Gorge) or on State Highway 35 (via the Pacific Coast Highway).
The guide has promoted this area for 64 years and has built up a solid reputation as easily the most cost effective advertising available in the Eastern Bay of Plenty & Eastland area. Nothing comes near this side for dollar value. The quality format providing a vast amount of data, useful and interesting information, ensures the booklet has lasting value and is retained as a valuable reference or passed on to friends. Combine with all other progressive businesses to promote our area as a leading tourist destination and a great place to live.
REMEMBER, all revenue is used in the publication of the guide or directly in the promotion of the Eastern Bay of Plenty & Eastland.

Opotiki to Gisborne via the Waioweka Gorge
(SH2)

The Waioeka Journey – Te Awa a Tamatea is situated on State Highway 2 between Opotiki and Gisborne. The highway follows a route carved by rivers through the steep forested hills of the Waioeka Gorge Scenic Reserve. The trip from Opotiki to Gisborne can probably take about two and a half hours but by picnicking or generally messing around anywhere in the delightful bush setting of the gorge the trip can profitably be made to last many hours longer.

Opotiki to Gisborne via the Pacific Coast Highway
(SH35)

State Highway 35 – This scenic part of the Pacific Coast Highway from Opotiki to Gisborne should not be missed. The coastal scenery encountered is beyond compare.A good range of accommodation and meals are available. There are no 24 hour ATM machines between Opotiki and Ruatoria.Eftpos is readily available but cash withdrawals can be limited.
