State Highway 35 – To venture East, around “The Coast” head up Elliott Street and over the Otara Bridge. You are now on State Highway 35, you will be taken into one of the more isolated regions of New Zealand. There are however plenty of options for quality accommodation and the availability of petrol has improved with a number of self-service 24/7 stations enroute, but check your fuel gauge before you leave as they are spaced at the 100kms, 160kms, 206km, 233km and 243km marks. Cash can be in short supply although Eftpos is now common, some cash for those odds and ends is advised. The sealed roads are in good condition but are occasionally winding so please drive carefully, as we want you to come back!
An early morning visit to the East Cape Lighthouse travelling out from Te Araroa or a number of side trips to visit the beautiful beaches and bays off the main road are well worth considering.

This is a popular and safe swimming beach. Here surf casting and long-line fishing is often well rewarded. There is a good picnic area with toilet facilities. Walking the beach and beach-combing can prove very interesting. The small hills rising on the right-hand side of the road were once the sites of pre-Pākehā native villages. Continuing on the main road you will find.
