The Ōpōtiki District is in the middle of a massive revitalization. “The Provincial Growth Funds” substantial funding initiative, has started serious activity throughout the Ōpōtiki District. After some years of very encouraging initial trials, the development of “The Worlds Largest Open Ocean Mussel Farm” to be focused on Ōpōtiki is a reality. The purpose built Open Ocean Whakatohea Mussels processing facility is now operating on Waioeka Road. Work on the Ōpōtiki river/sea bar is well advanced. This will allow direct access for the mussel fleet and other vessels into the river and up to the Ōpōtiki wharf. A big new Library/Technology Centre, Te Tāhuhu o Te Rangi is now open. With all this activity underway it can be said “Ōpōtiki is booming”.
