Mokorori Beach

10km from Gisborne
Over the hill from Tatapouri you will find Makorori Beach. The beach is approx. 4km long. At the Northern end the surf is most suitable for beginners. The Southern end of the beach has some of the best surf in Gisborne. Some really long rides are on offer here, with a mixture of rock and sand bottom breaks. The area can be surfed at all tides although there is some hazard from semi submerged rocks at low tide.

Okitu Beach

6km from Gisborne
Next beach heading towards Gisborne, Pines/Okitu is just before the very popular Wainui Beach. Although not as popular as the more consistent Makorori or Wainui beaches on the right day this stretch of beach can provide massively big surf. Although suitable only for the more experienced surfer these days can provide great entertainment for spectators. Be aware, this area can hold some danger from rips and currents. Be careful here, as the shallow water can quickly lure you out of your depth and into a possible dangerous situation. All these beaches are well served by toilets/changing sheds.

Okitu Scenic Reserve Walk: There is a loop track through the Okitu Scenic Reserve, which crosses over three small foot bridges and takes between 20-30 minutes. There is also a viewing platform in the reserve that looks out over Wainui beach and the surrounding hills.

Wainui Beach

4km from Gisborne
Wainui Beach is virtually right in Gisborne, but still retains the peace and restfulness of a country area.  The beach is beautiful for swimming and New Zealand renowned for surfing. A left turn at Wairere Road takes you into the settlement of Wainui Beach. Continue on Oneroa Road you will find Ocean Beach Motor Lodge just before you join the main highway again.
