Tolaga Bay is larger than most of the settlements on this coast and the home of The Tolaga Bay Holiday Park, Tipuna Tours, Off The Grid Café and The Tolaga Bay Inn which is one of the last remaining historical hotels on the East Coast. It has served the community and travellers for over 130 years. This country pub is now a community hub including an information centre.
The town boasts a nine-hole golf course, bowling club and skate park. The streets of this town are named after Captain Cook’s crew. Cook cast anchor here in 1769. The beach at Tolaga Bay is excellent for swimming and fishing and adequate facilities are available for boat launching.

What is probably the best situated camp on this side of the coast is the Tolaga Bay Holiday Park, situated about 3kms out of town, is right on the beach at the end of the bay next to both the Cooks Cove Walkway and the renovated Tolaga Bay Wharf.

What is probably the best situated camp on this side of the coast is the Tolaga Bay Holiday Park, situated about 3kms out of town, is right on the beach at the end of the bay next to both the Cooks Cove Walkway and the renovated Tolaga Bay Wharf.

The very long jetty served as a wharf for the area in the days of coastal shipping. A very popular fishing spot. This is the start point for the 5km Cook’s Cove Walkway which takes approximately 2.5 hours at a leisurely pace. You will pass by the awe inspiring Te Pourewa (Carved Beacon of Light) and experience spectacular views of both Tolaga Bay and Cook’s Cove from the top of the hill. When you reach this idyllic cove there are many information boards and you can also view the hole in the cliff wall.
