The Ōpōtiki District is in the middle of a massive revitalization. “The Provincial Growth Funds” substantial funding initiative, has started serious activity throughout the Ōpōtiki District. After some years of very encouraging initial trials, the development of “The Worlds Largest Open Ocean Mussel Farm” to be focused on Ōpōtiki is a reality. The new purpose built factory is now operating with Mussel processing at Ōpōtiki in the new facility on Waioeka Road. Work on the Ōpōtiki river/sea bar is well advanced. This will allow direct access for the mussel fleet and other vessels into the river and up to the Ōpōtiki wharf. A big new Library/Technology Centre is due to open in December 2021, so should be open as you read this. With all this activity underway it can be said “Ōpōtiki is booming”.
The Ōpōtiki District is highly rated as a hospitable relaxing place to visit, live, and work, with Rotorua, Tauranga and Gisborne all within a 160km radius, The District is a great natural Family Holiday Playground. A sportsman’s paradise with beaches and rivers and magnificent bush allowing boundless hunting & fishing or water sports. Water or land based the Ōpōtiki District has it all. The Motu Trails Cycleway adds to the attractions and provides a diverse range of cycle skills for novice or experienced riders and adds to our wide range of walking trails. Annual sports events include “The Muriwai Tournament” - Sports between Whānau and Iwi of local Māori. “The Motu Challenge Multi Sport Event”, Cycling Kayaking and running, attracting NZ wide interest. A “World class Rodeo”, and the popular “Big 3 Hunting”.

Start something new in Ōpōtiki

Ōpōtiki is bursting with opportunity and it is the perfect time to try something new, start a new venture or join one of the exciting industries burgeoning in the Eastern Bay, said Ōpōtiki Mayor, Lyn Riesterer.
“There is no better time to be living, working or investing in the district.
“We have a harbour entrance taking shape on our coast that will open up the town to an important new role supporting the aquaculture industry on our doorstep. The factory is already processing world-famous Whakatōhea Mussels. The new marina area is under development, the town centre is growing and flourishing. We have a brand new community hub with Te Tāhuhu o Te Rangi on Ōpōtiki’s main street. Extended cycleways and horse trails, significant housing projects in the pipeline, and millions being spent upgrading the infrastructure to keep up with this growth.
“Up the coast the growth continues with irrigation projects extending horticulture opportunities and new and emerging industries such as mānuka, macadamias, algae and spat.
“Locals who left many years ago are starting to return and finding sustainable and varied employment opportunities in Ōpōtiki.
“Whether you are a visitor just passing through, or fortunate enough to live here, work here or have business investments, I invite you to be part of Ōpōtiki’s booming future,” Mayor Riesterer said.
